Honoring (and Celebrating) the Women in the World

The month of May is very special to us here at Peake Academy as we take time to celebrate all the important and influential women in our lives. Our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends, and colleagues-- everyone continuing to work hard in their professional lives and contribute to their communities.

Our recognition of the women in our lives is an integral part of our culture, and it's one way that we can honor their individual experiences and contributions to society.

So whether it's International Women's Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, Mother's Day, or just a special month-long celebration of all the extraordinary women in our lives, here are a few ideas for celebrating and recognizing the importance of these incredible women.

The Many Ways to Honor and Celebrate the Women in Our Lives

All the different women in our lives often shape our views of the world, so it’s essential to help our children learn to appreciate the achievements of women every day better.

Whether it's a mother, sister, daughter, colleague, or friend, we can show them that women are a vital part of our society. And so we should not only show them respect but also make sure that we are helping them succeed in the world.

Here are a few ideas to express our appreciation and love for women all over the world:

Make a List of Women You Admire

When you hear the word "admire," do you think of a famous person you look up to? Or maybe a sports legend, a local personality, or a historical figure you idolize? But really, "admire" simply means to have a high opinion of a person.

In other words, it means to have respect for them.

Any person can be someone you admire. It can be a woman in your family, a friend at school, a coworker, a teacher, or a neighbor. It can even be a fictional character such as a movie character or a cartoon. It's up to you to decide who you admire.

Here's a small exercise to get you started: Make a list of ten women you admire. Why these women? It can be anyone that comes to mind. Your list might include your mother, grandmother, or a public figure who has spoken out about women's issues. It can be a woman who is famous and whom you may never meet. It can be a literary figure you've read about. It can be a fictional character. It can be any woman you choose.

You can admire someone for their intelligence or their humor. You can admire someone for their strength or how they overcome challenges. You can admire someone for their faith or their hard work.

Show your appreciation for everything they have done and continue to do.

Thank a Female Mentor or Teacher

One way to show honor and respect for women is by thanking female mentors or teachers. These women have played an important role in your life, and you may not have been where you are today without them.

You can show your gratitude and appreciation for:

  • your mom who always believed in you and encouraged you to follow your dreams.

  • your grandma for teaching you how to cook and showing you the importance of hard work.

  • your high school English teacher for teaching you how to write an awesome essay.

  • your friend who helped you pass math or the woman who showed you how to dance.

  • your mentor who helped you to succeed in life and business.

Take this opportunity to thank them for their guidance and support personally, and let them know how much they mean to you and how much of an impact they’ve made in your life.

Educate Yourself and Others About Women's Issues

One way to show honor and respect for women is by educating yourself and others about women's issues. This includes learning about the challenges that women face worldwide and how we can work to address them.

It also includes understanding the importance of feminism and how it benefits everyone, not just women. You can share what you learn with others to help create a more just and equitable world for everyone.

Support a Woman-Owned Business

Supporting a woman-owned business is another way to show your honor and respect for women. When you need a new product or service, such as when you're looking for a new accountant, caterer, or cleaning service, consider supporting a woman-owned business.

This could mean buying products from a woman-owned company or simply spreading the word about their business.

Women entrepreneurs today are changing the world from home to office. So, find and discover some of the best women-owned businesses in your neighborhood or on the internet today. Women are just as capable as their male counterparts and are often also more involved in the community, more caring, and more dedicated to making a positive change.

By doing all these, you are helping to promote and empower women in the business world.

Recognize Women’s Achievements

Some ways to recognize the achievements of women include telling them what they mean to you, sharing their work on social media, or nominating them for awards.

Take time to give a thoughtful compliment and let them know how much you appreciate what they’ve done for you. Or go ahead and craft a personal, inspirational tribute online for all your friends and loved ones to see.

For those you’ve worked with or done business with– leave a positive review, a skill endorsement, a much-welcome referral, or a nomination for an award within your space, especially if they have gone above and beyond!

Donate or Volunteer for Organizations That Support Women's Rights

Women's rights are human rights. For far too long, women have been oppressed in many different ways. They have been denied the right to vote, own property, pursue an education, and even have power over their bodies.

But despite all of this, they have persevered, and the women's rights movement has gained a lot of momentum in recent years.

Last year, the United Nations designated March 8 as International Women's Day to celebrate women's cultural, economic, and political achievements. And now, more than ever, it's vital to support women's rights through donations or even volunteering.

Spend Quality Time with the Women in Your Life

Finally, one of the best ways to honor women is to celebrate the ones in your life. This includes your mother, sisters, friends, and other incredible women you know.

Showing respect and appreciation for the women in your life can be as simple as giving them a hug, a compliment, hanging out with them, or taking them out for lunch or dinner.

The important thing is that you show them you care and want to spend some quality time with them.

Upcoming Celebrations Honoring The Women in Our Lives

This year, why not think about the women in your life, and do something a little different to honor them?

Teacher Appreciation Week

Every year, Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week in May. The dates vary from year to year, but it is always at the beginning of May. (Teacher Appreciation Day is actually one day- Tuesday- that is a part of Teacher Appreciation week!)

Remember: let your teachers know that you're grateful for their commitment, dedication, and hard work, especially to those who have made a lasting impact on you after all these years.

Mother’s Day

We celebrate Mother’s Day annually– on the second Sunday of May. The day is meant to honor all mothers and get people to remember their mothers. It is a day that is meant to celebrate the person who has helped us become the person we are today.

Many of us prepare for Mother's Day by planning a fun or relaxing day with mom. Her special celebration might include flowers, jewelry, coupons for handy services for the home or pampering, or handmade presents from the kids.

International Women’s Day

We celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 to remind everyone of women's essential roles in society. While we acknowledge the progress made, we understand that there is still more work to be done.

We must continue to fight for gender equality and women's rights. This day reminds us that we are all connected and have a responsibility to help make the world a better place for everyone.

Please join us in celebrating the women in your life and honoring their contributions to society.

Women’s History Month

In the United States, we celebrate Women’s History Month in March. This month is dedicated to teaching girls and women about their achievements, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

Much of the discussions on Women’s History Month highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.

Empower Women Everywhere

A woman's contribution to the world is never taken for granted. Women have a lot to offer the world and can flourish in any career path. Women have a huge role in improving the world; they don't need to be in charge, but they need to be given the same opportunities as men.

We believe that the more women are empowered, the better the world will be. Plus, women are simply more compassionate and understanding, which leads to a better community and home life.

There are many ways to empower women, but some of the most important include supporting women-owned businesses, donating to or volunteering for organizations that support women's rights, and educating yourself and others about women's issues. Taking these actions can help create a more just and equitable world for everyone.

Conclusion: a Final Word About Honoring (and Celebrating) the Women of the World

This is a time to celebrate all the women in our lives– their contributions to society and all they continue to do. They are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, and friends. They work hard in their professional lives and help grow and nurture their communities. We honor them for their strength, resilience, and courage.

For our children, it’s all about nurturing an attitude of gratitude. Teach them to realize the importance of women in their lives and how to show their appreciation for everything that they do.

These ideas are meant to help everyone honor the women of the world all year round. Women make our world go round. They're a fabulous addition to society and play a key role in ensuring everyone has a fulfilling life.
