As preschool teachers with a combined 20+ years of experience in the classroom, we know a thing or two about helping little ones stay focused! In this article, we will discuss how you can help your child focus at home.

We will provide helpful tips and tricks that will make it easier for them to stay concentrated on their work. Follow these tips to improve your child’s focus.

What causes lack of concentration in a child?

Kids can sometimes have trouble focusing on their tasks due to lack of motivation, too much stimulation from electronics, or an inability to prioritize. It is important to understand the root cause of your child's lack of concentration before trying any methods for improving it.

Taking the time to recognize why they are distracted may help you find more effective solutions. While figuring out the root cause of a lack of concentration in a child may take a while, so we wanted to provide you with some tips to make it a little easier for now:

Create an Ideal Learning Space

First, create an ideal learning space for your child. Having a designated area to focus on their school work can help them stay motivated and focused. Make sure the space is comfortable and free from distraction – this means no TV or toys out in the open. Fill the space with supplies such as paper, coloring materials, books, and other materials they may need.

Be Consistent

Second, keep a consistent routine. Routine helps children feel secure and comfortable; it also encourages discipline and focus. Set specific hours each day where your child should be focusing on their school work, and be sure to include times for breaks and play. While you should try your best to stick to these times so that your child has a sense of consistency each day, it’s important to also allow for some flexibility, because as we all know, life happens!

Provide Wholesome Snacks

Try to provide wholesome snacks for your child. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for helping them focus on their studies. Give snacks that contain plenty of protein, complex carbohydrates, and vitamins. This will help keep their energy levels up so they can maintain attention throughout the day.

Provide Guidance

Provide support and guidance throughout the day. Offering encouragement, praise, and assistance when needed can help your child stay on task and engaged in their studies. Additionally, ask them questions about what they're learning to make sure they understand the material and to show that you, too, are interested in what they’re learning.

Use Electronics Mindfully

When it’s time to focus on learning, take extra care to ensure that your child is using electronics for educational purposes only. Supervise your child’s screen time and always review websites and applications before letting your child use them. Set parental controls on devices to prevent access to certain websites or apps that may be distracting during study time.

These are some of the ways you can help your child focus at home. Implementing a designated workspace and routine, providing support and guidance throughout the day, and using electronics mindfully can drastically improve their ability to concentrate on their studies. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to helping your child succeed academically.
