How to Plan a Staycation

There’s nothing like a vacation to recharge your batteries, but when you can't afford it or don't have time for an extended stay abroad, there are plenty of alternatives that will still give the feel-good chemicals without breaking any budgets.

A staycation might be just what's needed at home with family while saving on travel costs—and who doesn’t want more quality bonding moments between loved ones?

What is a staycation?

Why not take the initiative and do something fun with your vacation money? A staycation is just like a trip, only without traveling. You’re sleeping in your own bed at home instead of sharing one or staying on expensive all-inclusive resorts that often come with lots of rules such as what you can eat or drink, and what times you can enjoy various activities.

A staycation is where you get to save hard earned cash while still enjoying a little vacation. You'll be staying at home in most cases, and pretend to be a tourist in your hometown or create new ways to enjoy your household as if you're at a vacation home.

There are many ways in which families opt to plan a staycation, so today we're going to cover the basics to get you started in the right direction.

How can I plan a staycation?

You're going to need some local options if you want to enjoy your staycation without spending too much.

For example, have you ever thought about enjoying a hike? Who would've thought that spending time outdoors is actually free when it comes to enjoying nature away from the big city. You can explore the great outdoors with your family, check out various parks with excellent hiking trails, or head over to any of the numerous public pools in your neighborhood.

If you really want to make the most of your staycation, ditch the car and take public transportation if it's available in your neighborhood. You'll discover many interesting places that you probably didn't know were there and you will enjoy having a different perspective of your city or town.

What activities can we do during a staycation?

Nature, sports, your favorite activities; the list of activities you can do on a staycation can go on and on. Consider some of your favorite hobbies that you never get to do, or perhaps try something new!

A staycation is also a great opportunity for family members to finally sync their schedules and do things together. For example, if there are always commitments or schedule conflicts preventing everyone from spending quality time together, give the staycation a go and see how much closer you can become as a family.

Explore your own city or town, if possible.

Find out what's new, what's happening, and where the best people-watching spots are. The more you discover about your turf, the better!

Tips for successful staycations:

  • Make your staycation a memorable family time.

  • Don't overthink it.

  • You don't have to spend money on activities.

  • and last but not least, don't forget to have fun!

The most important thing about planning a staycation is to make the most of every minute you are spending with your loved ones. You'll be surprised how little things can turn into a fun day out while having the chance to spend quality time with your family.
