How to Support your kids develop Growth Mindset

A growth Mindset is about having a positive attitude to learning and believing that we can develop our abilities through our efforts, persistence, and putting ourselves out there.

The opposite of this is a fixed mindset where people believe their intelligence or talents are fixed traits. They may say things like "I'm not good at math" rather than saying "I need to practice more to get better at math."

People with a growth mindset are more likely to take on new challenges, learn from their mistakes and persevere when things get tough. They don't give up easily.

So how can you help your kids develop a growth mindset?

Continue reading below for some tips that will help you encourage your kids to develop a growth mindset.

Encourage New Challenges Without Fear

People with a fixed mindset don't like failing and often will give up if they get things wrong. Encourage your kids to keep trying even when they get something wrong. We learn by making mistakes so the sooner we accept failure, the faster we start learning.

As parents, one of our jobs is helping our kids develop grit and resilience. We need to help them bounce back from disappointments, failures, and mistakes. This can be difficult when we want our kids to feel successful all the time but we don't want it to become an unhealthy habit where they avoid challenges or give up quickly because of fear of failure.

Make Mistakes OK

Praise your child when they take on a new challenge and try their best but don't praise them for things they are good at from the start. This will only reinforce a fixed mindset.

Encourage your kids to be brave and risk making mistakes. Let them know that it's OK to make mistakes as long as they learn from them. Teach them that mistakes are a part of learning and help them see the value in failure.

Model A Growth Mindset Yourself

One of the best ways to encourage a growth mindset in your kids is by modeling it yourself. Be open to new challenges, admit when you don't know something, and be willing to learn.

Encourage your kids to ask questions when they don't know something. Teach them that asking for help is a sign of strength not weakness and to feel good about their learning.

Learn Together

We all need a bit of support from time to time so it can be really helpful to give your kids a chance to learn from someone other than yourself. This could be a teacher, a coach, or maybe another family member.

When you give your kids the chance to learn from someone other than yourself, they feel good about their learning and see that we don't only learn from our parents. This will help them to develop a growth mindset and take on new challenges with excitement and confidence.

Be Patient With Mistakes

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. It's important for kids to know that it's OK to get things wrong and we don't have to be perfect. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn so be patient when your kids aren't perfect and let them know you love them even when they get something wrong.

In conclusion, it can be tough to have a growth mindset when things get tough but be patient with your kids and help them to see the value in their mistakes. With a little bit of encouragement, your kids can develop a growth mindset and be on their way to becoming lifelong learners.
