Handling Accidents and Injuries at Preschool

Do you wonder what will happen if your child is injured or hurt seriously at preschool? It’s a normal concern. But you needn’t worry. You can rest easier knowing there are procedures in place to keep your child safe.

Emergency procedures are in place and practiced so that emergencies can be handled calmly, quickly, and confidently. Fire, weather, and emergency drills are practiced regularly to prepare teachers to handle emergencies. These events require standard responses that are pre-planned and practiced by simulation at the preschool.

The most obvious indication of these plans is the evacuation notices that are posted throughout the building. Notices are one sign of the planning and preparation that goes into making sure your child is safe at preschool.

But what about accidents and injuries that do not require the immediate attention of medical personnel?

Teachers will administer first aid, help the child calm down and get comfortable, and fill in an accident report for you to see at the end of the day. We call most of these accidents “boo-boos,” because they are really a result of the normal process of growing up. A skinned knee, a pinched finger, a scratched elbow, and, yes, even an unfriendly bite will all be handled calmly and comfortingly by your child’s teacher.

Once we’ve handled the non-emergency “boo-boo” we will let you know about the accident, so you don’t have to figure out what happened on your own. Be sure to remember that some accidents may be so minor to your child that he/she won’t cry or get the teacher’s attention. If your teacher doesn’t know what happened, she will tell you that she doesn’t know. In the future, she will be more diligent in trying to make sure the accident doesn’t happen again without her knowledge.

How Parents Can Help with Injuries at Preschool

We will work very hard to make sure that your child is safe at school. But there are several things that you can do to help. Make sure we always have current telephone numbers for you and your physician. We can only contact you if we have accurate records. You might want to have a plan if voice mail answers your telephone. Who should we call to find you? Can someone be reached in person who can get in touch with you when you are not available by phone?

It’s good parenting practice to make sure that we know how to reach you if your daily schedule is different. If you are not where we usually find you, make sure to let us know in the morning during your drop-off routine. Leave an alternative number or a backup contact for us to call instead.

Finally, make sure that your alternate contact information is correct, and that he/she expects us to call if we can’t reach you. Other family members often serve as alternates if parents are not available.

Talk to aunts, uncles, grandparents, or even close family friends if you need to arrange an alternate. Help us serve you better by always keeping parent numbers and alternate contact information up-to-date.
