How to Turn your Backyard into a Fun in the Sun Classroom

Warm weather is finally here! That means it's time to start thinking about ways to enjoy the great outdoors. If you're looking for a fun summer activity, consider turning your backyard into a classroom!

With a little bit of preparation, you can create an environment that is perfect for learning. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for transforming your backyard into a fun in the sun classroom.

Think Safety

One of the most important things to consider when setting up your backyard classroom is safety. Make sure that there is plenty of shade available, and that all materials are safe for use in the outdoors. Additionally, it is important to have a designated area for storage so that items are not left out in the sun or rain.

Another consideration is the type of surface you will be using. If you have a grassy area, make sure that there are no holes or uneven areas that could trip students. If you'll be using pavement, make sure it is in good repair and free of cracks.

Establish Rules

Before beginning any activities, it is important to establish some ground rules. For example, you may want to set a rule that students must stay in their assigned areas. This will help to prevent any accidents or injuries. Additionally, you will need to decide how you will handle noise levels. If you live in a residential area, it is important to be considerate of your neighbors.

Create Stations

One of the best ways to keep students engaged is to create stations. This allows students to move around and experience different activities. When setting up stations, be sure to consider the age and ability level of your students. You will also want to make sure that there are enough materials for all of the students.

Some station ideas include:

  • A sand and water table

  • An art station

  • A sensory station

  • A writing station

  • A math station

How to Create a Sand and Water Table in your Backyard

One of the most popular stations is the sand and water table. This is a great way for students to explore different textures and materials. To create a sand and water table, you will need:

  • A large plastic container

  • Sand

  • Water

  • Small toys or objects (optional)

To set up your sand and water table, fill the container with sand and water. You can add small toys or objects if you like. Once the container is full, cover it with a lid or tarp to keep the contents from spilling.

To use the sand and water table, simply remove the lid and let your students explore!

An art station is another great option for your backyard classroom. This is a great way for students to express their creativity. To create an art station, you will need:

  • A table or surface for the students to work on

  • Art supplies (paint, crayons, etc.)

  • Paper

  • An art smock or old shirt (optional)

End of the Day

At the end of the day, it is important to clean up all materials and put them away. This will help to keep your backyard classroom organized and looking great! Additionally, be sure to check the weather forecast for the next day. If there is a chance of rain, you may want to move your classroom indoors.

With a little bit of planning, you can create a backyard classroom that is perfect for summer learning! These tips will help you get started. Do you have any other tips to share? We would love to hear from you! Join our Parent Advisor private Facebook group.
